THE ARTICLE .
To rookie actress-host Ling Lee, Vincent Ng is more 'husband material' than 'boyfriend material'.
She would know.
She's been secretly dating the hunky 32-year-old actor/wushu expert for the past year, after the pair met on a charity show.
Their relationship is an open secret within the industry, but neither has come out and admitted it to the media.
So The New Paper put Ling on the spot at Monday's press conference for the local movie Men In White, which marks her first leading role.
In the horror comedy directed by Kelvin Tong, which opens in cinemas today, she plays an uncouth and foul-tempered Ah Lian ghost struggling to come to terms with ghosthood in Singapore.
When asked how she and Vincent are doing, Ling, 22, laughed loudly and seemed embarrassed by our persistent line of questioning.
The former beauty queen and model repeated: 'How are we doing? We're on very good terms - have always been, and will be for a long time in the future.
'How long have we been going out? Erm, we've been going out for a while, pretty long.'
LOW-PROFILE ROMANCE
But the toothy 1.72m starlet admitted that they'd rather keep a low profile.
'We don't want... to be subjected to public scrutiny.
'It's hard enough for two people to get together, and we already have so many differences that we have to work out among ourselves.
'That's why we don't have much to say about our... our... friendship.'
Still, Ling was prepared to reveal some of her boyfriend's attractive qualities.
'Vincent is a very responsible person and he manages a lot of things very well. He's very stubborn, but that aside, he stands by his principles all the time, so I'm proud of him.'
However, his goody-two-shoes character can be a double-edged sword.
She hinted: 'Yah, he's very nice. It's good, no mind games. But sometimes girls like to play mind games you know.
'He's more husband material than boyfriend material, I must say.'
Ling conceded that Vincent has been 'very helpful' in giving acting advice.
But she doesn't usually follow his tips on how to deal with politics at MediaCorp - although she admits she's still learning how to nagivate the tricky waters in the entertainment industry.
'Sometimes I don't know if there are unspoken rules of the game, but I broke them unwittingly... being young, impulsive and stubborn.
'You have to try a lot of things on your own. What he may have failed at or succeeded in, I may not... so I don't take all of his advice,' she said.
Ling, a former The New Paper New Face 2004 finalist, was discovered after joining the Miss Singapore Universe pageant in 2005, where she nabbed the Miss Beautiful Skin and Miss Body Beautiful subsidiary awards.
This led to a two-year part-time contract with MediaCorp, and bit parts in TV dramas and variety shows while she was still studying business at NTU.
Ling, who graduates next month, is unsure whether she'll pursue acting as a full-time career. She said: 'I haven't made plans.
'I'm going on a long holiday after (the Men In White promotions). Maybe I'll come back with a clearer mind.'
